Named Banu—the word for woman in the Dari language—the program is hosted by Farzana Samimi, according to a report from the BBC. Samimi is a 27-year-old former student of veterinary science and psychology, now turned TV presenter. Focusing on a variety of problems faced by women in Afghanistan, Banu airs three times a week. In an echo of the days when Dr. Phil McGraw was a frequent guest on Oprah, Kabul-based psychiatrist Mohammed Yasin Babrak often appears on the program to talk about women's social and psychological issues. Samimi, who conceived of the program, was quoted as saying, "Most Afghan women cannot pour their hearts out to anyone when they have a problem. We hope to make this program their pulpit, so to speak. [Afghan women] have not got their rights in family and society... They have no control over their destiny."
